What NOT to Do Before Your Race!

We’ve already talked about training aspects, but there’s something else we need to consider: our behavior before and during the race.

Sometimes, we adopt less appropriate habits without realizing it, and they can affect our performance—or even the performance of those around us.
Mental and physical preparation, along with a set of good behaviors, is what makes your race a pleasant, repeatable experience.
That’s why I felt it was important to share some key recommendations on how we, as runners, should act in certain situations.
1. It starts even before the race begins.
The first moment is at the race kit pickup line. If you go during off-peak hours, it’s no problem. But during peak times, saving spots for friends or cutting in line without permission slows everything down and affects everyone. And don’t forget: you’ll need an ID to collect your kit.
2. Pre-race checklist.
The second tip is to create a checklist before race day. This simple step will help you organize all your gear and remember every pre-race procedure. Don’t leave anything behind!
3. Nutrition – stick to what you know!
This one is crucial: don’t try anything new before or during the race. That includes energy gels, isotonic drinks, or foods you’re not used to.Stick to the basics—and do them well!
4. Start zone etiquette.
Last but not least: don’t position yourself at the front of the start line if you’re not a fast runner. Not only is it dangerous for you, but it can also be risky for others around you. That’s why having a coach to support your training and help define a race strategy is key to making your road racing experience enjoyable and safe.
Happy training and see you soon!
